80's Blouse Sewn Cocktail Dress

Supplies: Thrifted beaded blouse $3.00

This was a past project I did, but updated it to wear for an upcoming occasion. Being a seamstress I can appreciate the craftsmanship of a beaded garment. When I found this 80's blouse at the thrift store, I knew I could make it into something other than a Golden Girls theme party costume.

The before was something you'd see on a Golden Girls episode, now it's a lovely dress I can wear to many different occasions. Head to thrift stores and search the racks for beaded garments, check out my Guide to Thrifting post here. Submit your designs to be shared on the website or tag #trashtocouture on Instagram.

  5. This is beautiful! Do you have any pictures of the process/steps you took to transform the blouse into a dress? Particularly how you maintained the beautiful lines of beading. Very well done! Gorgeous dress!

    1. Hi Leah,
Thank you, I did this so long ago that I don't know where I put the process of the photos. It was a challenge with the beading. I basically had to form it around the beading. The side seam is actually added fringe, which doesn't show well in the photos...I basically had a very little seam to work with, about 1/4 inch. The back i just sewed over some of the beading trying not to snap the needle.

  9. I find beautiful beaded tops at my Goodwill all the time and I would LOVE to know how you can find enough material in these tops to transform them into dresses. I'm petite and rather short so they don't need to be long . . . any chance you can give me some tips? I've been sewing since I was nine and have my own machine but I simply cannot figure out how you do it.

    Thanks!

  10. I find beautiful beaded tops like that one at my local Goodwill all the time and would love some tips on how you transform them into dresses! I've been sewing since I was young and have my own machine but as much as a I study the tops I can't figure out where you find enough material to make them into a cocktail dress. Any tips would be awesome!

    Thanks,

    1. That's the tough part... I have to usually add a zipper on the side seam which can be tricky with the beading. What I did with this one was added a fringe trim side panel to make it bigger in the bodice. You can do this by adding lace, fabric, etc. I show how to do it under the DIY section.
